Research Engineer Summary

Raven Industries is currently seeking an entry level self-motivated individual to fill a full-time position on the Stratospheric Navigation Research Team.

 

This individual will analyze wind patterns in the stratosphere, provide limited software development and maintenance for running simulations, interact with multidiscipline engineers to improve simulations, and research innovative ways to answer stratospheric navigation and mission planning questions, with the goal of building an effective long-duration, directed navigation capability for lighter-than-air platforms. 


 
Essential Functions

  •   Solving problems through focused data analysis.
  •   Performing trade studies to aid the flight vehicle and ground system engineering teams in evaluating design decisions.
  •   Prototyping innovative new tools for human pilots and automated algorithms to achieve more effective navigation.
  •   Researching physics based fluid dynamic and kinematic weather models for winds aloft prediction.
  •   Performing statistical analysis on model effectiveness compared with actual data.
  •   Developing and maintaining code for applying prototyped techniques in real-time to collected data.
  •   Participating in brainstorming sessions, project planning and tracking, code reviews, flight test planning and other activities as part of an engineering team.

 
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Data Science or Meteorology.
  • 1 - 2 years of experience is preferred.
  • Coding experience required; Python experience preferred.
  • Data analysis or database experience preferred.
  • Past experience in any of the following areas beneficial but not required: Data Analysis, Machine Learning, Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Physics-based Modeling, Meteorology, Fluid Dynamics.
  • Ability to work with high level of confidentiality. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Up to 25% travel may be necessary. 
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for access to government classified information
